Called to duty, “Occupy till I come,” spoken by Jesus Christ (Luke 19:13), serves as a clarion call to every believer. These words are a divine directive to remain steadfast in our faith and actively engage in God’s work until His glorious return.
As Christians, we are not mere spectators in the grand drama of salvation history. We are active participants, called to play a vital role in God’s redemptive plan. With each passing day, the urgency of our mission grows, as the return of our Lord Jesus Christ draws nearer.
The Imminent Return of Christ
The Bible, particularly the New Testament, is replete with prophecies concerning the second coming of Christ. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians, wrote, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
This imminent return should ignite a fire within us, propelling us to action. Billy Graham, one of the greatest evangelists of the 20th century, often spoke of the urgency of the hour. He once said, “We are living in a generation that is crying out for answers. People are hungry for something more, something real. It is our duty as Christians to point them to the only One who can satisfy their deepest longings.”
The Great Commission
Our Lord Jesus Christ, before His ascension, gave His disciples a crucial mandate: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:19-20).
This Great Commission is not merely a suggestion; it is a divine command. It is a call to action, urging us to share the Gospel of salvation with every person, regardless of their background or beliefs.
The Importance of Soul Winning
The salvation of souls is the ultimate goal of our Christian journey. As D.L. Moody once said, “The greatest work that mankind has ever been called upon to do is to bring men to God.” Indeed, the salvation of a soul is a priceless treasure. It is a reward that will last for eternity.
Every soul is precious in God’s sight, and it is our privilege to be instruments in their salvation. The Apostle Peter wrote, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This love compels us to share the good news of salvation with others, urging them to turn from their sins and embrace the grace of God.
When we share the Gospel, we offer hope, peace, and eternal life to those who are lost. We bring them out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. As we witness to others, we also deepen our own faith and grow closer to God.
Practical Steps to Fulfill Our Being Called to Duty
How can we, as Christians, fulfill our duty to be busy doing God’s work? Here are a few practical steps:
- Pray: Prayer is the foundation of all Christian service. Spend time in prayer, asking God to open doors of opportunity and to give you boldness to share your faith.
- Study the Bible: The Bible is our ultimate guidebook for life and ministry. Spend time studying God’s Word to equip yourself to share the Gospel effectively.
- Share Your Testimony: Your personal testimony is a powerful tool for evangelism. Share your story of how God has changed your life with others.
- Join a Bible Study or Small Group: Connect with other believers and encourage one another to live out their faith.
- Volunteer at Your Church: Serve in your church, whether it’s through teaching Sunday school, leading a youth group, or helping with outreach programs.
- Reach Out to Others: Be intentional about reaching out to non-believers. Invite them to church, share the Gospel with them, and pray for them.
As we approach the end times, let us heed the call to duty. Let us rise up and get busy, sharing the Gospel with a lost and dying world. The opportunity to impact lives for eternity is fleeting. The time is short, but the eternal rewards are great. May we be faithful to the task that God has given us, and may we see many souls saved before Christ returns.
