Being a Humble Christian
To be truly humble is to have the same mindset as Jesus Christ. If we humble ourselves, surrendering our will for His, then we will honor and exalt Him. We will be living a Christian life just as He wants us to do…
“And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.” Matthew 18:5-3
Here are some tips on being humble:
Talent is a Gift from God
We need to recognize that God gave us our talent. He is our Creator and gave us the gift of abilities and skills to glorify Him in our daily life. God enabled us to excel in our talents to better serve Him and to bring others to Him. We are not to be prideful of our talent, knowing that achievements are not made through our own efforts but through God who enables us to do so. Be thankful to God for the talent He has given to you.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” James 1:17
Reverence God Not Self
We should recognize that God is holy and just. We are not and should never think for a moment that we are equivalent to God and have the power to direct our life better than He can. When we reverence God, we acknowledge that He is holy and is our Creator. We are to seek God’s counsel in all matters and trust Him to direct our life instead of relying on our own efforts. We are to reverence Him and Him alone, not ourselves nor in anything we do.
“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2
Be a Good Testimony
See if there be any wicked way in you and ask the Lord for forgiveness. Sin prevents us from receiving God’s full blessings in our life. Imagine all that you could be missing out on because of sin in your life. Ask God that your life becomes a good testimony for others to come to know Jesus. Always be vigilant that sin does not overtake you and pray to the Lord who both forgives you and gives you strength.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Love Your Neighbor
We are to love God and love our neighbors. Always stay focused on these as Jesus said these were the most important commandments. Treat our neighbors better than ourselves and they will see the light of the Gospel instead of prideful sin in our lives.
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” John 13:34
Do Not Boast
Even as Christians, the urge to boast about doing the Lord’s work is ever present. Boasting is a form of pride and is sinful. Avoid the temptation to boast and your life will be more enriched with the blessings from God.
“Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.” Romans 3:27
Forsake the Approval of Man
As Christians, we are not here to win popularity contests or seek the approval of man. We are here to do the Lord’s work and seek His approval only. In the end, it is only His approval that matters. When men scoff at you and bully you, Jesus said to turn the other cheek. This way, you garner God’s approval and blessing. Let God will deal with those who revile you. He will do a much better job than you ever can.
“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Galations 1:10
Humble Yourselves
Pursue the humble life of a Christian as God wants us to and He promised to bestow more grace on us:
“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded … Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:6-8, 10
