And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” – Mark 4:39-41
Calm in the Midst of Storm
Jesus spoke the words “Peace, be still.” to a raging storm at sea that frightened His seafaring disciples. With the Lord in their midst, in three words, the storm was calmed, and they witnessed the power of God’s protection. During these troubling times, never forget that God is in control. He always has been and will always be. Believe in Him, believe His promises. He will keep his promise to comfort and sustain us in times like these. As the world clamors for answers, believers already have the solution, the assurances of God’s promises. By putting our faith and trust in God, He will see us through, and we take comfort in knowing that.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1
Nothing is impossible for God. His presence is within all believers, and we are to shine His light in this darkened world so others will be drawn to it. His light brings comfort, and hearts are stilled in the peace that it brings. Let us display the hope, lovingkindness, courage, and strength that God freely gives us so others may see and want the same.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:27
What to Do in Times Like These
Although we must distance ourselves physically from one another for a while, there are things we can still do to fulfill God’s work. Share the light of the Gospel at every opportunity, online, by phone, or written word. Read your bible and learn what God wants to communicate to you. Praise His name and give God the glory, especially during these difficult times. Think about others and help them where you can.
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:2
God hears every earnest prayer; it is our direct communication line with God. Pray for forgiveness that He will hear our prayers. Pray that others will seek Him and believe and turn back to God. Pray for our global church that it will be strengthened and grow in faith during this difficult time. Pray for our nation’s leaders that they seek wisdom from God to find solutions and cures. Pray for the healing of the sick and protection for those who are not. Pray for the medical teams and first responders who put their own lives at risk to save others. Pray that God will end this pandemic soon and to remind us that His words, “Peace, be still.” are so powerful even the raging seas of life are subdued.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Phillippians 4:6-7
Let “Peace, be still.” Reign in Our Hearts
Rest on His promises, trust in His Word. With Him, we can bear all things. He will never leave you.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” – Isaiah 41:10
