Dr. Luke’s Prescription for Our Disease is a sermon teaching us that our heart’s condition is terminally ill and we need to repent and ask Jesus to forgive us of our sin.
Of all the authors of the bible, only one was a physician, Dr. Luke, who wrote the Gospel of Luke. Paul wrote of “present distress” an accurate term for his time and our time now. In our present distress, we are in need of physicians to help us through this pandemic. Like many physicians, Dr. Luke did not create the cure.
Who is going to help us in our present distress and help prevent future occurrences? Our disease is a heart disease that has been around longer than our current pandemic. Dr. Luke is known as the beloved physician and Jesus is known as the Great Physician. Who knows our anatomy better than the one who created it?
Isaiah describes our sick condition as a terminally ill. Jesus is the cure. He came not for those who are righteous, but for those who are sinners. Those who are not sick don’t need a physician, those who are saved don’t need a savior. If you’ve never sinned, you don’t need to be forgiven.
The prescription we need in our society, our country, our world today is the prescription of repentance. The word “repentance” means to do an about-face, turn away from something. We must turn away from our sin. If we turn away from sin, we need to turn to Jesus Christ.
There is joy in heaven when one sinner repents. Confess and be cleansed. Many think they are saved by grace and no longer need to repent of sin. Being saved does not give us a license to sin. Being saved, one still has a sinful nature. There are two kinds of Christians, those who sin and those who think they have not sinned.
Before Jesus ascended into Heaven, He gave orders to preach the message of repentance and remission of sin in His name, starting in Jerusalem. The apostle Paul wrote of godly sorrow, which is when a person sins and the Holy Spirit convicts the heart of sin, they are sorry that they’ve sinned, and repent because they’ve grieved the Holy Spirit of God. Grief without repentance will make you sick. But godly sorrow brings us joy and joy in Heaven as well.
Who does the Lord want to repent? God is extremely patient with us. He gives us the opportunity to repent. It is not God’s will to have anyone perish. He wants ALL to come to repentance without exception. He wants us to return to Him.
Jesus called for those in churches to repent. He rebukes and chastens those He loves. He said to be zealous, excited, understanding that He loves us, and repent. In today’s society, we don’t want to repent and be honest about our heart’s condition. We need to judge ourselves and take an honest look at ourselves and fix the sin in our life, then, you won’t be judged by God. We all have things in our life that only we know and God knows that need to be turned away from.
Christians need to be honest with God. Even King David did great things but had great sin in his life. He asked for God’s forgiveness. There never is an excuse for things we do wrong. Whenever David realized he sinned, he asked the Lord to forgive him, and the Lord did. That is what we should do in each of our lives as well.
Dr. Luke’s Prescription for Our Disease sermon starts with verses from Luke 5:31-32:
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
and verses from Isaiah 1:4-6:
4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
Luke 19:10:
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
I Timothy 1:15:
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Luke 15:7:
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Ephesians 4:30:
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Luke 24:47:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
II Corinthians 7:9-10:
9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
II Peter 3:9:
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Revelation 2:5, 16, 21-22:
5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
Revelation 3:3, 19:
3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Romans 10:9-10:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Numbers 32:23:
23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
Psalms 139:23-24:
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
