Overcome Evil with Good is a sermon teaching us that by loving our enemies and showing them the light of Jesus Christ, evil can be conquered with good.
The Heart of the Problem
Some things are worth fighting for. If it isn’t worth getting hurt over, it’s probably not worth fighting for. Anytime you get into a conflict evaluate whether it is worth it or not. Our society and our world only have one hope, a genuine revival back to trusting God’s word. It is our only true hope. the real problem is in the heart and mind of man.
There is a basic, fundamental between right and wrong while other things are a matter of opinion. But focus on what’s clearly right and clearly wrong. There is a great deal of evil in our world today, there always has been and that’s not a new thing but it is on the rise. On a daily basis, we see more of it. How do we fix it? Overcome evil with good.
Only One Solution
We are going through an unprecedented pandemic. There has been nothing like this in the world before, and never has the global church been so connected to such a pestilence. The global church is hopefully thinking, saying, and praying the same thing. In II Chronicles 7, the scripture says, if we humble ourselves and turn from our idols that have a tight grip on our desires and our dreams; if we but confess them, our sins, God would heal our land. Let’s not squander this once in a lifetime opportunity, that’s what this plague is. It is an opportunity to get clean before the Lord, to be bold for Christ, believe Him more, and trust Him in all we have lost and with our fears of the future. Because God is shaking the nations and He is shaking our hearts too. Kingdoms are in upheaval and so are our livelihoods. The islands are trembling and so are our hearts. But are we responding? Are we actively engaged in bringing about His will on Earth as it is in Heaven? Are we telling people about Christ? That’s the answer, Christ is the answer.
We need to live our lives in surrender to the will of God. We are to give our heart and soul to the Lord but also our body, to control it physically. Too many people give in to the desires of the flesh. People give in and it ruins their physical life, their mental life, and spiritual life as well. Be holy in what you do physically. Be holy and be acceptable to God. We are not to be conformed to this world. Don’t worry about having to be conformed to this world. We should not go the way the world is going but go according to where God is going. The world, in general, is leading us to Hell and we should not follow its standard. But Jesus leads us to Heaven, which is the standard we should follow.
What Christians Ought to Do
The alternative to being conformed to this world is to be transformed, by learning a new way to think. We should not think more highly of ourselves than others and don’t look down on others. Think seriously, which is part of spiritual growth. We are all a part of the body of Christ with our different callings. Each one of us is essential in God’s work. When one member of the church hurts, we all hurt together. Let us proclaim God’s truth according to our ministry of serving others. If you are in a position of authority, do it right with diligence, not just to exert authority, but to accomplish the goal of service.
Let love be sincere, true love. And despise that which is evil. We are supposed to love the sinner and hate the sin. Don’t let sin define who you are. Hold on with all your might to that which is good. Love one another and be fervent in the Lord’s work. Rejoice in hope and be patient in troubled times through prayer. Take care of brethren who are in need. Bless those who do things against you and rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Be in harmony one with another, working as one team for a common goal.
How Good Conquers Evil
We need to conquer evil. If someone does evil, we do not need to do evil to them in return. Let justice prevail. Wrongs need to be made right but once the wrong is made right, we don’t need to continuously go after that person. They served their time and paid their debt, give them a chance for a new start. Be honest with everybody and tell the truth. If you possibly can, as much as is in you, live peaceably with everyone, a great principle to uphold. It is hard living because some don’t want to live peaceably. If someone does wrong, you don’t have to get him back, let it go. God will take care of it for you, “Vengence is mine, sayeth the Lord.” Each of us will answer to God one day. A great principle to live by is to treat your enemy as a friend, it is the right thing to do. By doing so, you are “heaping coals of fire upon their head” which could be interpreted as piling on God’s judgment on them, or, in another point of view, giving them the light so they can see truth and reality.
A Duty to Overcome Evil with Good
Don’t let evil conquer you. We should resist evil. By resisting evil, the devil will flee. We ought to fight it back, against evil. But how do you conquer evil? With good. It is the duty of Christians and the duty of the church to conquer evil. And the best way to do that is to be as good as we can be. Be the best person you can be, be the best Christian you can be. Present your body a living sacrifice, wholly acceptable to God. Be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind and overcome evil with good, not by force but by bringing light to a sin-darkened world. Do you think society, the world would be better if more people were Christian and followed the teachings of the Lord Jesus? The answer is clearly, yes. We need to introduce more people to the Lord Jesus and get more people into His word and that’s how you conquer evil with good.
Overcome Evil with Good sermon starts with verses from Romans 12:1-21:
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
