Singleness of Heart is a sermon teaching us that as believers, we should follow the example set by the first church, and then God will add daily such as should be saved.

On the day of Pentecost, Peter preached and said repent, be baptized, and 3,000 souls were added to the first church of 120 in Jerusalem that day. The book of Acts is the book of what happens next. After the apostles were empowered to speak in different languages and people were saved. The believers continued after Pentecost in the strength of the Lord, all 3,120 in the apostle’s doctrine. What is the source of our faith and practice?

If we could create our own reality, would anything go wrong? Of course not. Not even the bible promises that things will be great for us in our lives. The source of reality is not from ourselves. The source of faith and practice is not the church, but we ought to be a part of a church that teaches sound doctrine. The source of sound doctrine is the Word of God. The apostles’ doctrine is “whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” God sent his Son to die so that mankind could be saved. Jesus was killed by men but God raised Him up. Death could not hold Him. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as payment for our sins and the guarantee of eternal life — this is the apostles’ doctrine.

Humans are social creatures. We need to have fellowship. Biblical fellowship is when Christians get together in the Lord’s name, talking about the things of God. We fellowship with each other, but the Lord is central to our discussions. We are to have communion and prayers. We need to pray and we need to be a praying church. It all began when the 120 believers gathered in one place and prayed for ten days. Then, the Spirit of Lord came and did a great work. These things, the apostles’ doctrine, is what the first church continued doing after Pentecost. They feared the Lord, in that, they recognized the power, majesty, glory, and holiness of God and his authority in our life. The apostles did many wonders and signs as a confirmation of their message which was brand new to the world. Jesus did miracles that no one else had done, and the apostles empowered by God, did miracles to confirm they were the true messengers of Jesus Christ.

The early believers sold all they had and gave their money to the church and took care of one another. The church loved and cared for its members. And if it cost them something to care for a brother, they did it. They carried out Jesus’s idea of loving and caring for each other. And they continued daily with one accord in the temple as public worship. They gathered with one singleness of purpose and it was all about Jesus, and it still continues to this day in the house of God, the church house. But we are also to worship God at home with or without others present. We ought to be glad to get together in fellowship with singleness of heart. It’s not about personalities or personal preferences, it’s about the Lord Jesus, to worship Him and share Him with others. We need to be people with singleness of heart.

What took place with the apostles’ doctrine is a picture of the first church and as the first church, it laid out a pattern for all others to follow. The first church reached out to the community as we should today, giving a good testimony. We ought to be the kind of people that others can trust and if they trust you, they will come to listen to you. They built a reputation in the community and the Lord added to the church daily. The Lord added to the church because Peter and the others did what they were told to do. They were focusing on the Lord, teaching the Word, and did what God told them to do.

First comes salvation, then baptism, and then church membership — this is the bible way. The first church was a picture of what a church should be and is how our church should be today. We should be like them. A church where doctrine is taught and believed; a church that fellowships together; a church that prays together; a church where Spirit-filled, Spirit-dwelled, Spirit-lead believers love each other, love the lost, and long to see them saved; and a church that serves God with singleness of heart.

It is not about me, mine, or what I want but what the Lord wants. The Lord’s work is number one and central to it all. The church should want nothing but what Jesus wants. Then, the Lord will add daily such as should be saved. That’s what it means when we get together in singleness of heart.

⁴⁶ And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

⁴⁷ Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
