The Friendliest of Them All

The Friendliest of Them All

The Friendliest of Them All is a sermon teaching us that a Christian ought to be the friendliest of them all. A church or person needs to be friendly in order to share who Christ is. Sometimes we are too busy to take notice of others to be friendly with. We tend to judge people before we get to know them. Jesus went out of his way and set aside prejudices of the day to reach people, all people, including you and me.

At times we may see an affluent figure and give him respect while taking no notice of the poor person who stands nearby. We are to be friendly people. We are to be friendly to show Christ’s love. Scripture teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

It could be hard to love someone that dislikes you and ask ourselves why we should treat him any better? Jesus does not treat us differently. He treats someone as lost and in need of His love. We should do likewise and be friendly keeping the goal in mind of sharing the Gospel and sharing Christ’s love for all people. Are we friendly to all or just some? Do we care about all people or just ourselves? Do what’s right, be friendly to our fellowman.

The Friendliest of Them All sermon starts with verses from Proverbs 18:24:

24 A man that hathĀ friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friendĀ thatĀ sticketh closer than a brother.

Also verses from Luke 10:30-37:

30 And Jesus answering said,Ā A certainĀ manĀ went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and woundedĀ him, and departed, leavingĀ himĀ half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and lookedĀ on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassionĀ on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gaveĀ themĀ to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him,Ā Go, and do thou likewise.

John 4:1-39:

1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

4And he must needs go through Samaria.

5Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied withĀ hisĀ journey, sat thus on the well:Ā andĀ it was about the sixth hour.

7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her,Ā Give me to drink.

8(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10Jesus answered and said unto her,Ā If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13Jesus answered and said unto her,Ā Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16Jesus saith unto her,Ā Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her,Ā Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21Jesus saith unto her,Ā Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24GodĀ isĀ a Spirit: and they that worship him must worshipĀ himĀ in spirit and in truth.

25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26Jesus saith unto her,Ā I that speak unto thee amĀ he.

27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

32But he said unto them,Ā I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought himĀ oughtĀ to eat?

34Jesus saith unto them,Ā My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

35Say not ye, There are yet four months, andĀ thenĀ cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

37And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

39And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

Matthew 5:43-48:

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye moreĀ than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

James 2:1-9:

1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ,Ā the LordĀ of glory, with respect of persons.

2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
