The God of Truth is a sermon teaching us that we should be wary of our adversary the devil and to live in truth, and the source of all truth is God.

The Father of Lies

There are many descriptions in the bible of Satan, who has been called the dragon and the devil, for example. Jesus told a group of haughty religious leaders in John 8:44, that they were of “their father the devil, the lusts of your father you will do, he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it.” Jesus called Satan the father of lies. Therefore, when we lie, we are actually doing the work of Satan. Lying is satanic.

Truth and Light

Paul describes Satan in II Corinthians 4, as the one who blinds minds in case the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus, who is the image of God, should shine on them. Paul says Satan wants to blind people so that they should not know the image of God himself. They do not realize Jesus is the truth and that they need to put their faith in the Gospel. There is a great correlation between truth and light. Truth brings light and gives us the light, the glorious light of the Gospel of Christ.

His Kingdom is the Earth

We need the truth, but Satan is the god of this world. Satan has authority in this world, he has his followers and subjects in this world. Without understanding the bible and being influenced by the world, we have the wrong ideas of what Satan is like, for example, Satan is the king of Hell where he reigns and he lives, and then he sends his demons to bother people and when it’s really important, he pops up on Earth to bother people. This is a popular misconception, but it is not taught in the bible.

The bible tells us that he is the god of this world. His kingdom is not in Hell, it is on the Earth. In the book of Job, Satan tells God where he has been, walking up and down and to and fro on the Earth. Peter warns us to be watchful of our adversary, the Devil. Satan’s kingdom is on the Earth.

The Source of Real Truth

The source of real truth is God, himself. Satan is the source of lies. There is a real opposition between the God of truth and the father of lies, and light and dark which cannot abide in the same place. Jesus and Paul warned us about the father of lies and the god of this world.

Psalm 31 is a prophetic and Messianic psalm written by David who tells us of the God of truth. David writes that he will be delivered by righteousness, by the Lord Himself. He describes the Lord as a shelter in the time of storm. David’s enemies have laid a trap for him and he needs the Lord’s help to get out of it. David commends his spirit into the hands of the Lord, trusting his everything to the Lord, just as Jesus did on the cross; that He would commend His spirit into the hands of the Father. We put our spirit and our all into the hands of the Lord even to the point of death because He has redeemed us. We are His by creation, we were lost, and then He purchased us, redeeming us.

All Truth is God’s Truth

David acknowledges God and calls him the God of truth. John writes in I John that there is no darkness at all in the Lord. God’s truth sheds the light of the Gospel into our hearts. We need to find God and we need to know that He is the Truth. All truth is God’s truth, He is the source of truth. We have a battle for truth today. There have people today who say we have no truth. The laws of physical science are all God’s truth. Measurement is God’s truth. There are things we know will work the same every time and that is part of God’s truth. God, the designer, the creator of the universe is the God of truth.

David says he hates empty lies and rejects those who give credence to empty lies. There are a lot of people who tell you what they think you want to hear. But people don’t like a liar. We innately do not like lies because they come from the father of lies who is Satan. We can’t trust a liar. But we trust in the Lord. There is one place where we can trust the truth and that place is in God.

Call Upon the Mercy of God

David praises God for His mercy. He had problems, but God considered his trouble. God knew him when he was in trouble and the Lord gave him lots of space and a way to escape. David confesses his sin and calls upon the mercy of the God of truth. We will always have trouble and may not see a way out or light at the end of the tunnel. When we find ourselves in this situation, ask God for mercy as David did.

Confess to God that you’ve gotten off track in following God and let sin come into your life, that’s why you’re in trouble. Be as a broken vessel, like David describes as a “dead one out of mind.” David says he heard the slander of many, to undermine him with lies and to make them look better. That in itself is a lie making the person a worse liar then the one being slandered.

Live In Truth

David said he trusted the Lord, for He is his God. David prays to live for God and to look for truth in this wicked world. We all need to look for truth, stand for truth, find out what truth is, learn the truth, know truth, and we need to live by it.

Those who are wicked, liars, and slanderers should be ashamed, not us. For God to bless us in that way we need to make sure we aren’t doing those things. If you live for the Lord, people are going to lie about you. They lied about Paul, Moses, and Jesus. They will lie about you to tear you down. Our security is not in our strength nor is it in the strength of others. Our strength is in the God of truth. Trust in the Lord and stand in His truth, you stand for His truth and let Him secure you. Praise the Lord for His marvelous kindness, His grace.

Faith is the Key

Faith is the key and here’s how: First, you must believe who He is. Second, that He is the rewarder of them who diligently seek Him. Those who live in truth and plentifully will be rewarded. Third, be of good courage and your heart will be strengthened, all who hope in the Lord.

When we live in this world and society, we will come across many lies. We are surrounded by many lies every day. What we will need to do is to center our faith, our hope, our thinking, and all of our life upon the God of truth. Who is the God of truth? Jesus Christ is the God of truth. In Jesus’ own words, He said He is the Truth.

The God of Truth sermon starts with verses from Psalm 31:1-24:

¹ (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

² Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

³ For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.

⁴ Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

⁵ Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.

⁶ I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.

⁷ I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

⁸ And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

¹⁰ For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

¹¹ I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

¹² I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

¹³ For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

¹⁴ But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.

¹⁵ My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

¹⁶ Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake.

¹⁷ Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

¹⁹ Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

²⁰ Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

²¹ Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

²² For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

²³ O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

²⁴ Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

John 8:44

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

II Corinthians 4:4-6:

⁴ In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

⁶ For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Luke 23:46:

⁴⁶ And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

I John 1:5:

⁵ This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Hebrews 11:6:

⁶ But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
