The Heritage of the Servants of the Lord is a sermon teaching us that keeping God’s law doesn’t save anyone. The people of the Old Testament knew that they should believe and trust God to be saved. The Lord has always been about faith in Him. What He has always wanted from people is our faith and our trust. God is holy and righteous but He is also merciful and forgiving. He sees that we do not have righteousness and He gives us His righteousness.
Our Heritage
God’s will for us, our heritage, is His righteousness. We do not have any righteousness of our own. In the Book of Isaiah, our righteousness is described as filthy rags. The righteousness we have is imputed upon us by our Lord, our Savior which we receive by faith. “Their righteousness is of me, saith the Savior.”
The Lord God of Israel is the only one true God. The Lord God demands righteousness. But then He gives it to those who don’t have any — when we but trust Him. The Lord is holy and righteous and powerful, but He is also loving and merciful.
Sharing God’s Mercy
We must trust the Lord during our daily life with all its stresses, temptations, sickness, and challenges we go through. And then, we are to take that mercy and share it with a lost world. There is no greater need in this world than to be saved, the salvation of the soul. They need to know the mercy of the Lord and the righteousness that comes by faith and it is believers who need to share this message with them.
The Heritage of the Servants of the Lord sermon starts with verses from I Corinthians 10:1-15:
1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
7 Neither be ye idolaters, asĀ wereĀ some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but GodĀ isĀ faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bearĀ it.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
Also verses from Isaiah 54:1-17:
1 Sing, O barren, thouĀ thatĀ didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thouĀ thatĀ didst not travail with child: for moreĀ areĀ the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
5 For thy MakerĀ isĀ thine husband; the LORD of hostsĀ isĀ his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
6 For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.
7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.
8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.
9 For thisĀ is asĀ the waters of Noah unto me: forĀ asĀ I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.
10 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest,Ā andĀ not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
13 And all thy childrenĀ shall beĀ taught of the LORD; and greatĀ shall beĀ the peace of thy children.
14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
15 Behold, they shall surely gather together,Ā butĀ not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.
16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongueĀ thatĀ shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. ThisĀ isĀ the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousnessĀ isĀ of me, saith the LORD.
