The Purpose of the Scriptures is a sermon teaching us that it is through the bible that we learn about salvation and shows how mankind can be profitable and complete in the eyes of God.
The First Purpose of the Bible
There are two purposes for the bible having been written. First, it is to teach us about salvation. We are to continue in what we have been taught and have been assured of. If someone tries to sway you in doctrine, prove it in the bible. Don’t stray from the truth as others did and have fallen. Timothy received his biblical training in the home. He learned the scriptures from Paul, but he grew up with a solid foundation being taught scriptures by his mother and grandmother.
If you want your child to grow upright, you need to train them in the scriptures in the home. If you want to rely on the school systems we have today, you will get a completely different philosophy than what you really want. The bible can enlighten a person and point them to salvation. This is the only book that an unbeliever can read and changes their life. They read it, listen to it, and God tugs at their heart to have them understand what He wants them to do.
There are plenty of self-help books around but there is not a book like the bible. An unbeliever can be convicted by the bible and be saved. Critical thinking often pops up when the bible is opened, and readers ask themselves what God is trying to tell them, or why are they reading those verses. The bible can teach someone salvation, making them wise to be saved. No other book in the world will help you get there. It is through faith that we are saved and not by works.
Faith is in Christ Jesus. Salvation is through grace by faith, that childlike faith. Salvation is putting your faith in Jesus your Savior, not some work or duty. It is through Jesus that this mind is in you. The mind being in you that was also in Christ Jesus. It is through Jesus that we can get salvation. This is the first point of II Timothy 3, that the bible teaches us salvation through Jesus Christ.
The Second Purpose of the Bible
The other purpose of the scriptures is to help us be profitable and complete. All scripture is given by the inspiration of God. God spoke the scriptures. We believe in plenary verbal inspiration, that all of the scripture is God-breathed. God spoke through forty different authors.
A God that can breathe life into a person can certainly breathe to receive the Word. If God can breathe life, we can be certain He can breathe scriptures. God kept the scriptures pure throughout the history of the bible. In the 400s, the Latin Vulgate was the first translation of scriptures created. When it came to the first English translation in the 1300s, there was controversy, not so much in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament. Through the centuries, translations developed until the King James version was finally made based on the original languages the scriptures were written in. Later attempts of newer styles of translation caused errors. In their attempt to create a better translation, they were destroying what the bible says. Which translation should we trust, the old King James or newer translations? There are massive differences between them, even omissions in the newer translations from the original text, essentially rewriting the bible.
When you change, alter, or omit scripture from the Word of God you give it a different meaning than what God intended. Taking out key doctrines can lead people astray. In the case of bible translations, old is better. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, not what we feel we like and choose to leave out. All scripture has been given by God and God has preserved His Word. The bible is profitable for doctrine, or instructional teaching, for reproof or correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The bible teaches when you do wrong, you are taught how not to do it again. It is a good thing to be convicted by the Word of God. People don’t want to do that today; they just want to feel good.
God gives us the bible so that the man of God can be made perfect and complete, to be fully equipped to do good works to magnify God. The bible exists so that man can be profitable and complete in the eyes of God. The scriptures teach us about salvation, showing us how to get to Heaven. The bible shows us how to live for Him, to be the man and woman that God wants us to be, and how to share the bible with others today, this week, this year. Share with those who need to hear the truth and the bible is truth. The King James Bible is the most accurate translation of what God-breathed through the original authors.
The Purpose of the Scriptures sermon starts with verses from II Timothy 3:14-17:
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
