When You Pray is a sermon teaching us how to pray using the example Jesus gave, The Lord’s Prayer. We come to the Lord and have a heart-to-heart communication.
We Need to Pray
Our country and the world are in crisis. Many Christian ministries are under attack. Pray for people and churches under attack by legal systems and authorities and physically. Prayer is essential right now and is the communication of the human heart with the creator of the human heart. Prayer is one of the deepest needs mankind ever had. The only hope we have in our country is to a wholesale return to God — a revival. It’s been our crying need. We have problems that only prayer can solve. Man’s leadership is needed and the bible says to pray for our leaders. We do not have the science or knowledge to solve mankind’s problems. That is why we need to turn to the Savior and communicate with God.
Jesus gave us an ideal prayer, the Lord’s Prayer. There are portions of scripture that are recognized by believers and nonbelievers. The Lord’s Prayer is a lesson on how to pray that Jesus taught us. He said, “when you pray.” The Lord expects you to pray, not if you pray. You can pray a lot in a few minutes. Stay in constant prayer with the Lord. Just be sure to pray daily and often.
How Not to Pray
We have so much to do and obligations to tend to. We need to pray throughout the day, whenever we can. Jesus says to communicate with the Lord without distractions. People are trying to apply rules and regulations on how, when, and where to pray and that’s absurd. You cannot by any measure of force stop or make a person stop praying. Prayer comes from the heart, you are speaking directly to the Lord. Prayer is private and is not a public exercise, just talk with the Lord. Pray secret prayers to God and He will answer openly. It is one of the ways people are brought to God, through answered prayer. Jesus says to not use empty words, “vain repetitions that the heathen do.” Prayer is not a repetitious chant.
Prayer is a genuine heart-to-heart talk with god. You don’t have to pray a long prayer to be answered, it can be short. It’s the sincerity of the prayer that matters not wordiness. We are not to pray like nonbelievers or like hypocrites or show how deeply spiritual you pray for others to see. God knows what you need. Then why should you pray? God wants to hear from you and wants you to talk to Him and spend time with Him. God wants you to call out to Him. Our Heavenly Father gives good gifts to His children.
How to Pray
Jesus shows us how to pray in Matthew 6. He starts with “Our Father.” Not everyone has the right to call God “Father.” We are sons of God when we are saved. Whoever trusts God and are born again are the children of God, that’s what the Word of God says. When we pray, come to speak to your Heavenly Father. He is the Lord and King of the universe and God thinks about you. When He was on the cross, He thought about you. Ask anything in His name and He will do it. Know that wherever you pray, you are a child of God.
God’s name is holy and sacred. Understand He and His names are holy. Pray for the kingdom of the Lord to come to Earth. Our Lord’s will is always done in Heaven. The prayer is to pray for what is done in this world. Pray every day for your daily need. Bring your debts to the Lord and pray to forgive your debts to Him and to other people. Forgive those who wronged you. Pray for God’s help in temptation, to lead us away from it. Protect us from the evil of this world. Then praise the Lord, the kingdom to come, His power, and His glory forever, throughout eternity.
If you forgive others who wronged you, God will forgive you. But if you don’t forgive others, you won’t be right with God. Prayer has always been essential and necessary especially now. Pray your heart out to God. Ask God to help you pray as He would have you to pray.
When You Pray sermon starts with verses from Matthew 6:6-16:
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
I Thessalonians 5:17:
17 Pray without ceasing.
Jeremiah 33:3:
3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
John 3:5-7:
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
John 1:11-12:
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
I John 3:1-2:
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
I John 5:1-2:
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
