Christ’s resurrection is the most singular event of all time, with eternal implications for all humankind. Resurrection Sunday, known as Easter, presents an excellent opportunity to share the Gospel with friends, family, and anyone else who will hear. Christians around the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why? The resurrection is the foundation of our enduring Christian faith and hope.
“But now is Christ risen from the dead.” – I Corinthians 15:20
Even non-Christians engage in some manner of celebration, festivities such as Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets, and Easter feasts – a reason for happy family gatherings. Some recognize it as a religious holiday and attend church. But many miss the true impact of the resurrection. Christians should take advantage of this occasion to talk about the risen Christ.
Some say Christ’s resurrection is a hoax, yet it endures for thousands of years with billions of followers, and billions of copies of the Bible, God’s Word, sold as the bestselling book of all time. If Christ never rose from the dead, He would have been forgotten long ago.
Each of the twelve apostles who witnessed the risen Christ is reported to have died violent deaths as martyrs, except John, who was exiled to the island of Patmos. Throughout history, people have given their lives because they thought a lie to be true. But it is improbable that the apostles would have given their lives for a false claim that they, themselves, had fabricated.
How can we share the wondrous resurrection with others if they have never heard or are skeptical of the risen Christ? What can we tell them about its significance? Here are some key Bible truths you can share about the resurrection.
Jesus is the Son of God
The scriptures confirm that the resurrection is evidence that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In one of those passages, Paul wrote:
Romans 1:4: “And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”
And in Jesus’ words:
John 10:17: “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.”
John 10:18: “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
Forgiveness of Our Sin
Because of Jesus’ resurrection, we are assured that our sins can be forgiven, blotted out, erased. He took the punishment of our sins upon himself. Jesus claimed to forgive sin, something only God could do. By claiming He can forgive sin, He is equal to God. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God, guarantees our justification.
Mark 2:5: “When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Paul wrote:
Romans 4:24: “But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;”
Romans 4:25: “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
Access to God’s Grace
Because of Jesus’ resurrection, we have access to God’s grace, His blessings, His presence, His promises, His assurances, His guidance, and His love. The risen Christ cleared the way for us to have everlasting life and be inseparable from God because we can become the children of God. The power of the resurrection resides within every believer.
Romans 15:13: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
Ephesians 1:19: “And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,”
Ephesians 1:20: “Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,”
The Sovereign God
The resurrection shows that God is living and sovereign and rules without limitation. Time, space, and matter do not affect His sovereignty. Of all religious beliefs, only Christianity’s founder has eyewitness accounts of His bodily presence dwelling among people after His resurrection. Even sixty years after Christ’s death, He appeared to John on the island of Patmos.
Revelation 1:17: “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:”
Revelation 1:18: “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
Death is Not the End
Christ’s resurrection proves that human existence does not end at death. God has the power to give life, take life, and can reanimate the human body. The account of raising Lazarus from the dead after four days in a tomb was a pivotal event in Christ’s ministry. Jesus said to Martha, a sister of Lazarus:
John 11:25 “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”
John 11:26 “And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
And Paul wrote:
1 Timothy 6:13: “I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;”
I Corinthians 15:20: “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”
I Corinthians 15:21: “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.”
I Corinthians 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
I Corinthians 15:23: “But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.”
Christianity’s Victory
Christ’s resurrection is a picture of the ultimate vanquishing of the enemies of Christianity. Jesus, as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, overcame His enemies. As the slain Lamb of God, Jesus has victory over death, resulting in Christians having victory too.
Revelation 5:5: “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
Revelation 5:6: “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”
Revelation 12:11: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
To support His claims as the one true God, Jesus foretold that He would return from the dead three days after He died on the cross. Because He did come back from the dead, Jesus demonstrated He has control over life and death, which is something only God could do. Therefore, the resurrection of Christ proves the God of the Bible is real and true.
