The Resolute Christian

The Resolute Christian

Each new year, many of us create a list of resolutions we are determined to fulfill. These are often worthy goals to better our lives such as reducing debt, losing weight, eating healthier, spending more time with family, etc. But soon, these fall by the wayside as other cares and needs take priority or old habits creep back in. By year’s end, we chalk it up as another failure, but a new year is about to start and we console ourselves by trying again. This may be the attitude of the world, but as Christians, we may be pouring too much energy into physical, temporary things and not focusing enough on godly, everlasting things.

The bible doesn’t even mention new year resolutions, but it does mention to better ourselves spiritually, share the gospel, and live by example — things we can do on a daily basis. These come naturally to the resolute Christian and don’t require much effort like a new gym class would. In so doing, we give glory to God and fulfill our duty as children of God, plus it comes with big benefits — storing riches in heaven.

Godly Goals for the Resolute Christian

Make this new year your very best as a resolute Christian, set simple goals that glorify God and are easily achieved. By year’s end, you will have accomplished something more meaningful, more powerful, more substantive than anything this world could offer you. And as for those other things in our life – managing debt, weight, family time, etc., pray and ask God to help you with those. God always hears our prayers and helps us through every situation. Trust and He will direct you.

Keep It Simple

Here are some easy goals that are guaranteed to boost a Christian’s life:

  1. Read the entire bible in one year by reading 10 to 12 minutes a day. And if your eyes tire quickly, listen to an audio version available free at Bible.com. “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” – Luke 4:4
  2. Rely on God more. Trust that God will see you through every test, trial, affliction, heartbreak, and every circumstance. Too often we want to control the direction of our life, but only God is the keeper of it. Learn to “let go, and let God,” you’ll be amazed and ask yourself, “why didn’t I do this sooner?” “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:13
  3. Just as King Solomon did, ask God for wisdom to help you make wise decisions in your daily walk through life. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” – James 1:5
  4. Spend more time with God. Immerse your mind in scripture, sing praises to Him, be prayerful, attend church more, and enjoy Christian fellowship. These are just some of the ways you can spend more time with God. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” – Matthew 22:37-38
  5. Be a light in the world. Share the gospel whenever, wherever you can, with friends, work associates, and others. Be someone they can talk to about Christianity. Be a good example of a Christian in all you do. Others will notice your consistencies and inconsistencies. And what could be simpler than to invite a friend to church with you? “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” – Matthew 5:14
  6. Volunteer in a ministry. If you have extra time on your hands, how about getting involved in a church ministry like singing in the choir, visiting senior centers, or other church activities. There are many Christian-based organizations you can get involved with like food banks, homeless outreach, and others. Check locally or on the Internet for Christian-based organizations that interest you. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24

Being a resolute Christian with godly goals, does not mean we are perfect. But we should always strive to be more Christlike. What better way than to set easy attainable goals that have far reaching impact in our own lives, the lives of others, and come with out-of-this-world benefits!
