He wrote the words that became America&#8217;s anthem, but he also wrote hymns and advanced Sunday School in America&#8217;s new western territories.<\/p>\r\n<p>We\u2019ve been celebrating America\u2019s independence from England since July 4, 1776. Most Americans celebrate the day with family get-togethers, cookouts, and watch fireworks lighting up the night sky. It is a day when we are proud to be Americans and reflect on the freedom and liberty hard-won by those before us. We think of our military and veterans, the Revolutionary War, founding fathers, and our flag.<\/p>\r\n<p>As Christians, we think of God and the blessings He has poured out on America. We sing songs filled with patriotism and national pride that give glory to God such as <em>America the Beautiful<\/em>, <em>My Country, \u2018Tis of Thee<\/em>, <em>The Battle Hymn of the Republic<\/em>, and <em>God Bless America<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD;\u201d \u2013 Psalms 33:12<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<h3><em>The Star-Spangled Banner<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p>There is one song that stands out among the others that became our national anthem, <em>The Star-Spangled Banner<\/em>, written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. This song\u2019s history is unique, and you can learn how <em>The Star-Spangled Banner<\/em> came to be by watching this video:<\/p>\r\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hZe8CPGA1E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p>The photo below is of the actual Great Garrison Flag that survived the bombardment at Fort McHenry, inspiring Key to write his infamous poem. Samuel Slater is credited with bringing Sunday School to America in the 1790\u2019s. Under Key\u2019s leadership the Sunday School movement helped evangelize the West. The following are excerpts from <em>Writer of \u2018Star-Spangled Banner\u2019 helped evangelize West thru Sunday School movement<\/em>, an article written by David Roach of the Baptist Press.<\/p>\r\n<p>Christian educators say Key\u2019s two passions went hand in hand. Sunday School could once again, they say, be a catalyst for spiritual and moral renewal in America.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cAmerica and Sunday School literally grew up together,\u201d said David Francis, a retired director of Sunday School for LifeWay Christian Resources. \u201cNowhere else in the world has Sunday School been embraced like in America. Nowhere else in the world has the idea of a constitutional republic been sustained like in America. Two ideas. Both of God. At the same time. Spreading together across a continent. What a fortunate coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11520\" src=\"http:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825.jpg\" alt=\"Francis Scott Key\" width=\"1800\" height=\"2314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825-600x771.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825-768x987.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.westpark-baptist-dev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Francis_Scott_Key_by_Joseph_Wood_c1825-797x1024.jpg 797w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Key was \u201can earnest Christian,\u201d and \u201ca teacher of a large Bible class,\u201d according to Edwin Wilbur Rice\u2019s 1917 book <em>The Sunday School Movement and the American Sunday-School Union<\/em> (ASSU). Key joined the ASSU board of managers in 1824, the year the union changed its name from the Sunday and Adult School Union.<\/p>\r\n<p>The ASSU\u2019s 1835 Annual listed Key as a \u201clifetime member\u201d based on his contribution of at least $30 \u2014 the equivalent of $815 today.<\/p>\r\n<p>Francis wrote in his book <em>Missionary Sunday School<\/em> that the ASSU\u2019s aim was to start Sunday Schools across America where individuals from lower economic classes heard the Gospel and learned to read and write \u201cusing the Bible as a primary text.\u201d Sunday Schools typically comprised children \u201cwho rarely or never attend[ed] church,\u201d and adult classes often formed as a secondary ministry.<\/p>\r\n<p>Key chaired an 1830 ASSU meeting in Washington, which instituted the \u201cMississippi Valley Enterprise,\u201d a campaign that established west of the Appalachian Mountains more than 61,000 Sunday Schools for some 2.7 million pupils over the next 50 years, Francis wrote. Many of those Sunday Schools developed into churches, some Baptist, in areas previously without an evangelical witness while others became weekday schools before the era of American public education.<\/p>\r\n<p>When Key died in 1843, the ASSU stated in its Annual, \u201cBy the decease of the Hon. Francis S. Key, of the District of Columbia, we lose one of our earliest and most steadfast advocates and patrons.
